Hurricane Dorian formed on August 24th and lasted for 48 hours, leaving an estimated 70,000 people homeless. Dorian surpassed Hurricane Irma in 2017 to become the most powerful hurricane on record in the open Atlantic region, outside of the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico. It was the most intense tropical cyclone on record to strike the Bahamas, and is regarded as the worst natural disaster in the country's history.
One of the first places in the Bahamas ravaged by Hurricane Dorian of Category 5 left most structures flattened or swept to sea. Damage in the Bahamas was one of the worst due to the prolonged and intense storm conditions, with thousands of homes destroyed and at least 77 direct deaths recorded. It is estimated to have left behind $3.4 billion in damage.
